Atkins Safety Question
"I was on this diet a couple of years ago (Protein Power) and lost 20 lbs. I went back to bread and pasta and regained it. Now, I've been trying Atkins, and lost 8 lbs. but what other people are saying is worrying me...
I have some health problems such as emphysema, a heart condition and some clogged arteries and high blood pressure. I am borderline diabetes and have fibromyalgia now and then. Plus I now have panic attacks and depression. I know... a mess! But, I have hopes!
I've been told that this diet is dangerous for someone like me who has too many health problems. The thought is that my kidneys would be at risk unless I stuck to it and never ate any carbs again. This is unlikely as I "need" something like a donut once in a while... not every day. But enough so life is still worth living. I have no vices left!
Anyway, how sure would I be that Atkins would not be harmful to me?
Thanks
Chris"
Atkins Safety Answer
Dear Chris,
There are no clinically proved contraindications for any of your conditions that I am aware of. However, I think the best for you would be consulting with a lowcarb-trained physician or dietitian.
There's anecdotal evidence that low carb helps for fibromyalgia and vascular conditions. My own fibromyalgia was almost gone after about 3 weeks on Atkins diet and it returned every time I cheated for more than a week. I am going to complete my research into fibromyalgia and low carb. I do have some ideas why it can work. Meanwhile, please read this:
