Pass the Avocados: Why You Should Eat More of This Super Food

People have been eating avocados for over 10,000 years, and with good reasons—the health benefits of avocado qualifies it as a “superfood”. It’s packed with good nutrition and makes a healthy addition to any diet.

Nutritional Value

One ounce of fresh avocado has about 45 calories, 4 grams of fat and 1 gram of saturated fat. Being all-natural, avocado contains zero trans fats. In that ounce, there are about 2 grams of carbohydrates from dietary fiber, and zero sugars. An ounce of avocado also contains 1 gram of protein, 5% of your daily intake of vitamin C, 1% of vitamin A, and 1% of iron.

Avocado also contains omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, folate, vitamin K, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. However, what really pushes it over as a superfood is that it contains oleic acid and antioxidants that help your body create a healthy environment for cells.

Benefits of Eating Avocados

If you are going to eat fat in any form, you can't do any better than avocado. It is hands-down the healthiest form of dietary fat we know of.

Eating avocados improves your ability to absorb carotenoids like alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and lutein. These have been shown in some studies to reduce the risks of cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers.

Because it's higher in fiber than any other fruit, eating avocados daily can help lower your cholesterol.

Ways to Use Avocados

You don’t really need much to enjoy an avocado—just slice one up and sprinkle a little lime juice on it, and you’ve got a wonderful snack.

Forget dressings and mayo—next time you feel like crunching on some raw veggies, mash yourself some avocados and use it as a dip. This is a rich, creamy, and delicious treat; it’s hard to believe it’s so good for you.

Since ripe avocado makes a lovely, creamy mash, and avocado is about the healthiest fat you can eat, start replacing your mayo with avocado when you make sandwiches.

Chop up avocados into cubes and throw them into a salad. Top your burgers, tacos or fish fillets with some delicious avocado. Or make a fabulous guacamole-salsa by tossing avocado chunks, chopped tomatoes, onions, peppers, and cilantro together with a splash of lime juice.
