Juicing Vs. Green Smoothies: Which Should You Choose?

Both are touted as a super-healthy way to provide your body with energy and nutrients, and to keep your weight down. Both are great ways to get your recommended daily servings (and then some) of fruits and vegetables in the healthiest way possible—fresh and raw. But which one should you choose, and which is better?

The Difference between Juicing and Green Smoothies

There is a difference between making juice and making a green smoothie, and because of the different processes, there is a bit of a difference in nutritional value as well. When you juice your fruits, vegetables, and herbs, the juicer extracts the juice, leaving behind the pulp (which leaves behind some of the nutrients and all of the fiber).

When you make a ‘green smoothie’ out of your fruits, vegetables, and herbs, you don’t use a juice, you use a high-powered blender. The blender purees the ingredients, making it thick like a smoothie you would buy at the mall. Unlike juicing, nothing is left behind—all the fiber and pulp of the produce is pureed in the drink.

Benefits of Juicing

When you juice your fruits and veggies together, you get a sweet-tasting liquid chock full of fresh anti-oxidants that are very easy to digest and assimilate into your system for a quick burst of energy. Phytonutrients found in plant foods-- which contain things like carotenoids, flavonoids, and phytoestrogens-- are more readily absorbed through fresh juice. It goes straight to the bloodstream where you can best utilize it. Phytonutrients help keep your body functioning properly and are beneficial in preventing all kinds of diseases. Because juice is thin, you can drink more of it and really load up.

Benefits of Green Smoothies

Green smoothies offer a great deal of nutrition as well, though your body won't be able to drink as much or process it as quickly as juice. That thickness does have its benefits, though. For one thing, it's much more filling than juice. You can use a green smoothie as a meal replacement. They're also full of fiber-- which you actually drink when having your produce in smoothie form. This fiber is the best way to keep regular. If cost or convenience is an issue, it takes far less fresh produce to make a smoothie than to juice, so smoothies are cheaper. It's also a lot easier to clean up a blender than it is to clean a juicer.

Why Choose?

You don’t really need to choose—no matter which you prefer, they’re both healthy. And you can certainly make both—have your juice when you need to load up on energy quickly, and have your smoothies to satiate you and keep yourself regular. Either way, you’re still getting all the benefits that your fruits, veggies, and herbs have to offer.
