How To Get More Energy Without Caffeine

Do you find yourself stumbling to the kitchen every morning to grab a cup of coffee or tea? Does your day go downhill mid-morning until you have that next hot cup of caffeine? Is it impossible to get through the rest of the day without an energy drink to give you a boost?

If so, you might think that the answer to waking you up or banishing fatigue is more and more caffeine, when really the answer could be the opposite. What you really could use is a natural ‘high’.

The Problem with Caffeine

There’s nothing necessarily wrong with caffeine in general—the problem is when you rely on it to keep you going. When you use caffeine to stay awake, the effects can actually last for hours-- making it more difficult for you to fall and stay asleep. So you use more caffeine in your waking hours to combat this. You become more immune to the effects of caffeine, thus they don’t last as long and you find yourself crashing faster. You end up reaching for more caffeine. You fall into a vicious cycle in which the very thing you use to stay awake and alert is the very thing causing you to get tired and run down.

Natural Energy Boosts

Eat protein for breakfast. Carbohydrates, like that bagel or cereal, cause spikes in your blood sugar and energy-- it goes down as fast as it went up. Protein will stabilize your blood sugar to provide a steady supply of ongoing energy throughout the day.

Let in the light. When it gets dark, your brain releases melatonin to help you relax and sleep. When the sun rises, the brain releases cortisol to wake you up. So throw open the curtains and let in the light. If you must spend your days indoors, use bright artificial lights. Lights will keep your biological clock signaled that it's not time to sleep yet.

Exercise more. This is just another good reason to keep up with a daily routine of exercise-- the more you exercise and oxygenate your blood, the more energy you'll have to spare.

Juice some greens. Greens are filled with nutrients that get your blood pumping and your body organs working. Add a little fruit for flavor and sweetness, but for the most part throw greens into the juicer: kale, broccoli, parsley, and spinach. The darker the green, the better.

It may take a couple of days of withdrawal symptoms, but once you actually get off the caffeine and get into more natural ways to boost your energy, you’ll find you feel better not just for a few hours but all the day through.
