Fabulous Ways To Get More Fiber In Your Diet

A fiber-rich diet is important for so many reasons. Fiber helps maintain healthy bowels, guards against colon cancer and diabetes and it even promotes a healthy weight. Yet despite all the benefits, many of us don’t get enough fiber in our diets. Mention fiber and most people think bland, boring and dry. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Read on for some fabulous ways to get more fiber in your diet.

Switch to Whole Grains

If white rice, bread, and pasta are staples in your diet, make the switch to whole grains. Whole grains have significantly higher fiber content than the white versions. Make the change to brown rice, whole grain pasta and whole-wheat versions of your favorite breads and crackers.

If you find that you have trouble making the switch, then try a fiber-enriched version. Some foods even have partial whole-wheat options. At the very least, cut down on the white stuff and make a portion of your pantry whole grain.

Bring on the Beans

People often forget to include beans in their diets and recipes. Beans are an excellent source of fiber and protein too. They are also economical and versatile. They go way beyond just “rice and beans.” You can add them to soups, salads and everyone’s favorite—chili.

Some people don’t like cooking with beans due to the prep time for soaking. If that’s the case, forgo the dried beans and buy them in the can. They still have great nutritional value either way. Try to make at least one bean dish week. With all the beans to choose from you’ll never get bored. Try black beans, navy, pinto, kidney, fava, lima, lentils, white, and chickpeas. The list is practically endless!

Have a High Fiber Dessert

When you think dessert, chances are you’re not thinking about fiber. Time to change that! Instead of cakes, cookies, and other processed foods, load up on fruits and berries.

And just because it’s healthy and full of fiber doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Try a bowl of mixed berried with heavy cream or a scoop of your favorite ice cream. Or have a pear or baked apple drizzled with honey and nuts. Even a caramel apple will give you a healthy dose of fiber while satisfying your sweet tooth.

Hide Fiber in Your Recipes

Sometimes the best fiber of all is the fiber you don’t notice. Who says you can’t sneak in some fiber into your recipes? Consider adding some oatmeal to your casseroles or including veggies in pasta sauces and gravies. Even a sprinkle of nuts, cranberries or raisins in dishes can add a gram or two of fiber here and there. Remember it all adds up. Be creative when you cook and see how many ways you can hide fiber in your recipes.

Getting more fiber in your diet doesn’t have to be a chore, nor does it mean you need to eat bland and boring foods. Eating fiber can be fabulous!
