Healthy Hair And Scalp: Undoing Summer Damage

Summer is a time to let loose and have fun—but all those summer activities can wreak havoc on your hair. Consider the saltwater or chlorine damage, the excessive humidity, and the breakage from spontaneous ponytails in the heat of the day. As autumn approaches, it’s time for some hair care damage control.

Give the Ponytails a Rest

Even when you’re using elastic bands, breakage is inevitable when you’re wearing ponytails a few times a week—and even more inevitable if you wear it in the same place every day. Ponytail breakage tends to happen close to the scalp, which translates to frizz and fly-away hairs. Now that the weather is turning cooler, give your hair a rest. Wear it down for a while. If you must wear it up, opt for a large clip and do it up in a loose twist.

Give Your Scalp some TLC

With all the hair products to keep it in place during the humid months, all the sun scalding and swimming and sweating, your scalp could use a little tender loving care. Try giving it a brown sugar exfoliating scrub. Mix equal parts of brown sugar and conditioner, then massage it into the scalp. Part the hair in sections to get really under the hairline and onto the skin. Wash and rinse as usual, and you’ll find your scalp smooth, refreshed, and squeaky clean.

Do a Deep Conditioning Treatment

If you love swimming in the summer, it can really take its toll on your hair, leaving it dry and damaged from salt and chlorine. This can leave you with a lot of frizz and dry ends. As the summer draws to a close, make it an annual ritual to give your hair a deep conditioning treatment with cholesterol—mainly applying it to the ends of the hair and working it through. This will help restore some of the silkiness and luster to your hair.

Revitalize Your Color

If the summer sun has washed out your hair coloring, revitalize it with a natural color rinse. Steep a cup of vegetables or herbs in a quart of boiling water for 30 minutes. Use carrots or beets for red highlights, chamomile or thyme for blond hair, or black tea for brunettes. After the water cools, use it as a final rinse in the shower when washing your hair to give the color a lift.

Get a Trim

A final way to combat those split ends is to get a trim. Even if you just have a half-inch trimmed off, it can make a lot of difference in giving you a smoother, sleeker, healthier look. Don’t let the summer get the best of your hair—take action and tame it so you look fabulous this fall.
