Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Healthy, Strong and Beautiful

Survey after survey has shown that the thing people notice most when they first meet you is not your fashionable clothes, not your hair or great posture, not even your makeup, but your smile. A smile has a tremendous impact when making a first impression on a new potential friend, employer, and especially romantic interest. Despite what some companies will promise you, a great smile doesn’t come out of a box—it takes a little work on your oral hygiene to ensure those pearly whites shine.

Brush Often

Brushing your teeth often is the single most effective way to keep your teeth looking and feeling great. Brushing reduces harmful, teeth-damaging acids, gets rid of bacteria that can cause cavities, and wipes away the plaque that can become a cement-solid tarter within 48 hours.

Brushing twice daily is the absolute minimum-- but after every meal is really the ideal. Keep in mind, the toothbrush isn't a magic wand-- merely waving it over the teeth doesn't make them cleaner. It requires time to scrub them clean-- a tooth-brushing session should last two to three minutes, and don't forget to get the back of your teeth!
Always choose toothpaste with fluoride, and don't forget to floss at least once per day to get rid of any remnants of food particles.

Choose Snacks Carefully

Not only are natural, crunchy fruits and vegetables healthy for your body, they're also healthy for your teeth. Snacks like apples, pears, carrots, and celery have an abrasion-like effect on teeth. They actually help scrub them and lift stains off the surface.

Avoid snacks with any kind of food coloring in them, such as dyed sports drinks, chips covered with powdered cheese, or candies dyed with food coloring. These kinds of foods will stain your teeth and lead to discoloration.

Drink Through A Straw

Coffee and tea lovers can suffer from a dull smile. The beverages they need to sip in order to get them going in the morning can really stain the front teeth and be counter-productive to your efforts to maintain a white smile.

A simple solution is to drink your coffee and tea through a straw. When you sip from the cup, you suck the brown liquid right over the front teeth. When you drink through a straw, the straw bypasses the teeth, drawing the liquid into the back of the mouth.

It’s amazing what a difference a few simple measures will make, and you’ll be rewarded with a clean, bright, healthy smile.
