Meditate for Better Brain Power

Want to boost your brainpower? Then learn to meditate. Meditation isn’t just for relaxation and stress relief. Quieting your mind can help improve your focus and cognitive ability. And it even goes beyond mental faculties. Meditation can also improve brain function related to motor skills, balance and a host of other processes. After all, your brain is the command center for your body. Meditate and turn your brain into a more powerful and dynamic bio-computer!

Scientific Evidence

Most people know about the benefits of meditation, but science has proven its favorable effects on the brain. Researchers at UCLA found that meditation can physically increase brain size or gray matter. In addition, they noted that meditators have significantly more folds or gyrification in their brains as compared to non-meditators. What does that mean? Greater folding means faster and more efficient information processing. It’s like boosting your computer’s internal processor. Better brain speed can be had with as little as fifteen minutes of meditation a day.

Harvard, Yale and MIT studies also discovered that meditation improves the cerebral cortex or outer portion of the brain. This area often thins with age, leading to those “senior moments” and memory lapses. Meditation helps with neuroplasticity, thus boosting brainpower.

Building Up Your Brain

Better brainpower doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time and effort to build up your brain. In many ways the brain is like a muscle. It needs a regular work out to maintain peak condition and performance. And like a muscle, if you don’t use it—you lose it.
Luckily improving your brain can be done with minimal time investment as long as you’re consistent. Even Dr. Oz says that as little as twelve minutes of meditation per day can help prevent memory loss.

Try building up your brain slowly with short five-minute intervals of meditation and gradually increasing session time. You wouldn’t run a marathon without first learning how to run one mile, would you? It’s the same with meditation, start out slowly and work your way up. You’ll be more likely to stick with it.

Try a Five-Minute Mini Meditation

To get you on the road to better brainpower, start with this five-minute mini-meditation. Do it once a day for a week, then either increase your time or do two sessions per day. The goal is at least twelve to fifteen minutes daily, whether at once or in sessions.

1. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed.

2. Sit comfortably in a straight-backed chair with your feet firmly on the floor and hands placed comfortably your lap.

3. Set a timer for five minutes.

4. Close your eyes.

5. Inhale to the count of four and then exhale to the count of four. Acknowledge any thoughts that come up, then let them go. If you find that repeating a word, phrase or mantra helps you do so. Continue focusing on your breath until time is up.

Keep up your meditation practice and you’ll be rewarded with better brainpower!
