Fed Up with Hiccups? How to Cure them Quickly

Hiccups are annoying, to say the least. Not only are they physically uncomfortable, but they can also cause a great deal of mental and emotional strain. It’s strange to think that something that lasts for only a few minutes can cause so much stress. This funny bodily function is no laughing matter.

What’s up with Hiccups?

The medical term for hiccups is singultus, but despite the fancy name, it is a fairly simple issue. Hiccups occur when the diaphragm experiences uncontrollable spasms. As this muscle contracts, it affects the larynx and the vocal cords close, causing that characteristic hiccup sound.

Hiccups are commonly caused by eating too fast or too much. Drinking too much or consuming too much alcohol can also bring on these spasms. In some cases acid reflux, gastrointestinal or respiratory problems can trigger them. Anxiety and stress are also well-known causes.

Quick Cures

Needless to say, once you have a case of the hiccups, you’ll do almost anything to alleviate them fast. There are two basic methods for a successful hiccup remedy. One is to briefly increase or retain the carbon dioxide in your body since it tends to help the diaphragm relax. The other is to stimulate the nasopharynx (upper throat behind the nose) or the vagus nerve that runs from the brain to the colon. Ready for some quick cures?

Holding your breath is a tried and true method that works fast since it helps stop the diaphragm spasms. If you find it difficult to hold your breath, then try breathing into a paper bag. This is just as effective for temporarily increasing the carbon dioxide in your bloodstream

Another cure is to gently place your fingers in your ears. Doing this helps to stimulate the vagus nerve and combat those spasms.

Speaking of ears, gently massaging your earlobes can also stop those hiccups dead in their tracks. Again, you’re working with the vagus nerve and energy meridians to relax the diaphragm.

Drinking a glass of water can banish hiccups quickly. The liquid helps stimulate the nasopharynx area and swallowing can help correct your breathing rhythm.

Another quick water trick is to place a paper towel over the glass while you drink. The paper towel acts as a filter so you have to essentially “gulp” to get the water down. This forces your diaphragm to pull itself out of its spasms.

Try something sweet to stimulate the nerve endings in your mouth and throat. Doing so helps the nerves “reboot” themselves quickly to stop the spasms. Try a teaspoon of sugar, a little honey, or some cocoa powder.

These techniques should help you cure your hiccups in no time. If for some reason your hiccups are chronic or last more than three hours, seek medical attention. You will likely be put on medication to help with your symptoms. Either way, you’ll find relief and no longer be fed up with hiccups.
