10 Ways to Ward Off Colds and Flu

Cold and flu season will be here before you know it and it’s never too early to prepare. Get into good health and hygiene habits now and you’ll be ready to shake off any cold or flu bugs that come your way.

1. Keep Your Hands to Yourself

As a child you were probably told to keep your hands to yourself. Well, now that you’re an adult, it’s still good advice—particularly when it comes to cold and flu. Germs and viruses are easily transmitted through handshakes. Try to avoid contact with others, but if you do shake hands, sanitize or wash yours as soon as possible.

2. Wash Your Hands Often

In addition to washing your hands after a handshake, get into the habit of washing your hands often all the time. Frequent hand washing can keep those germs at bay. It’s especially important before meals. Make it a habit!

3. Avoid Touching Your Face

We often touch our face, eyes and nose hundreds of times a day without even realizing it. Those pesky germs love to enter the body through these areas, so try to be cognizant of how much you touch.

4. Watch Those Sneezes

When you feel a sneeze coming on, grab a Kleenex right away. If one isn’t handy then do the “vampire move” and sneeze into the crook of your elbow. You might resemble Dracula hiding behind his cape, but you’ll avoid spreading your germs to others.

5. Exercise

Regular exercise helps to build up your immunity. So don’t skip those workouts at the gym just because it’s cold and flu season. If you’re worried about contracting illness in a crowded fitness center, try working out at home instead.

6. Get Enough Rest

Burning the midnight oil or partying until all hours won’t do much for your immune system. Make sure you’re getting adequate rest. Most people need about 7 to 8 hours, but if you’re feeling under the weather, catching a few more Zzzz’s might be a good idea.

7. Eat Healthy

There’s no substitute for a healthy diet when it comes to building a healthy immune system. Cold and flu season can really put your body’s germ fighting ability into overdrive. Ensure that you’re getting good nutrition. You might even want to add some more garlic to your diet now. It contains allicin that’s known to help fight viruses.

8. Stay Hydrated

Conventional wisdom tells you to drink plenty of fluids when you’re sick, but staying well hydrated can also ward off colds and flu. Mucus membranes work much better when the body is well hydrated. So be sure that you’re drinking enough water.

9. Up Your Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a great immune booster and can help you kick that cold before it starts. Try a supplement or better yet, get your dose from Vitamin C rich foods like citrus fruits, red bell peppers, papayas, or cauliflower.

10. Stay Happy

There’s nothing better for your health than a positive attitude. Do your best to avoid stress and negative thinking as they can take a toll on your immunity and leave you more susceptible to colds and flu.
