Pet Insurance Options: How To Protect Your Pet's Health and Well Being

Pets are family members who we care for just as much as we care for ourselves. Their health is of the utmost importance; therefore, providing our pets with good insurance coverage is essential and provides peace of mind. There are several options on the market and we review them in detail here.

Why Is Pet Insurance Important?

Pet insurance allows you to choose the best treatment options for your injured or ailing pet. You are not restricting your choices based on finances but instead based on what is going to best treat your pet. There are many ways that pet insurance differs from your health insurance, such as allowing you to pick your pet’s doctor. You are not required to stay “in-network” and you can select whichever veterinarian you would like. Also, pet insurance does not discriminate against the age or breed of your pet. You can insure your pet at any age though it is recommended that you do so as soon as you adopt them.

What Does Pet Insurance Cover?

Pet insurance is mainly for unexpected illnesses and accidents, such as a urinary tract infection or when your pet swallows something it shouldn’t have. This way you can focus on your pet and not stress about the cost of treatment. Most pet insurance policies will cover up to 80% of costs after deductibles. Although coverage will usually include emergencies, chronic conditions, congenital conditions, and cancer, most plans will not cover annual wellness checks and pre-existing conditions.

Pet Insurance Options

Nationwide pet insurance offers “the best pet insurance ever” with plans covering wellness, illness, emergency visits, and more. There are three plan options: Whole Pet with Wellness, Major Medical with Wellness, and Major Medical. For the Whole Pet with Wellness plan, you get a 90% reimbursement and it has the most expansive coverage of all three plans. Whereas, Major Medical with Wellness has defined annual benefits for accidents, illnesses, and hereditary conditions. Lastly, Major Medical has the least coverage with accidents and illnesses, some hereditary conditions, and cancer.

HealthyPaws provides one simple plan with no caps on claim payouts where most claims are processed in two days. Their plan covers illnesses, accidents, hereditary conditions, congenital conditions, chronic conditions, diagnostic treatment, x-rays, blood tests, ultrasounds, and more. Additionally, HealthyPaws has a foundation that helps homeless pets get the medical care they need in order to get healthy and get adopted.

Embrace pet insurance covers all of your pet’s unexpected illnesses and accidents under one comprehensive plan where you can personalize your plan by selecting an annual maximum, annual deductible, and reimbursement percentage that fits your needs and budget. And although no pet insurance company covers pre-existing conditions, Embrace distinguishes between curable and incurable pre-existing conditions. They will cover curable conditions “after 12 months symptom and treatment free.”
