Ease Fibromyalgia Pain with Four Natural Treatments

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain throughout the entire body which leads to sleep issues, emotional distress, and fatigue. This condition affects approximately 4 million people in the United States. There are cases where symptoms begin after a psychological or physical trauma, and there are other cases that occur gradually over time with no particular event triggering the condition. Currently, there is no cure for fibromyalgia though there are medications that aid in treating the symptoms, as well as natural treatments and remedies.

Natural Treatments for Fibromyalgia

1. Vitamin D may help ease fibromyalgia pain. If a person with fibromyalgia has low levels of vitamin D, they may benefit from vitamin D supplementation or getting a bit of sun daily. A study conducted in Germany found a connection between vitamin D deficiency and an extended duration of aches and pains in bones and muscles. Another study published by the Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that “people with non-specific musculoskeletal pain” were deficient in vitamin D. Like with any new treatment, even natural, it is important to speak with a medical professional for proper guidance.

2. Magnesium is a mineral known for relaxation, as it relaxes the muscles, nerves, and brain, as well it helps avoid muscle spasms, back pain, and weakness. Studies have shown women with fibromyalgia to be deficient in magnesium. And magnesium can help with fibromyalgia symptoms and pain.

3. Exercise, as a way to reduce stress, is important for people with fibromyalgia. It has been shown that stress exacerbates the symptoms of fibromyalgia; therefore, implementing lifestyle changes in order to aid in stress reduction is crucial. Exercises such as yoga and tai chi are excellent for relaxation.

4. Hot and cold treatments can alleviate fibromyalgia pain. Treatments involving moist heat will boost blood flow and temporarily ease stiffness and pain. Test the temperature with your hand before applying the heat directly to your body. Taking a cold compress, such as an ice pack, and applying it to the body, can alleviate deep muscle pain. Both simple at-home treatments are a good way to provide some relief on a daily basis.
