Four Natural Treatments That Reduce The Symptoms of Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can cause abdominal pain, diahrea, weight loss, and anemia. It can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract. Some people may have intense chronic symptoms and others may live a life that is symptom-free. The medical community is not exactly sure what causes Crohn's disease but certain factors can influence whether you get this disease, such as your genes, your environment, or your immune system. Currently, there is no cure for Crohn's disease but there have been major treatment advances over the last few decades, such as medications and natural treatments that aid in subsiding symptoms.

Natural Treatments for Crohn’s Disease

There are natural treatments that can complement medications that your doctor subscribes to aid in reducing the symptoms of Crohn's disease and help boost your immune system. Following are four natural treatments for Crohn's disease:

1. Probiotics are a good way to keep your gut in balance, which is essential to your immunity, and highly beneficial if you have Crohn’s disease. Your gut is made up of bacteria and probiotics add good bacteria which in turn can eliminate the bad bacteria. As well, your gut houses 70 percent of your immune system; therefore, it is important to keep it in tip-top shape. You can take probiotics in pill form or eat probiotic-rich foods such as yogurt, kombucha, tempeh, tofu, and kefir to name a few. Though check-in with your doctor on which probiotic-rich foods will not agitate your gastrointestinal system.

2. Omega-3s are linked to reducing inflammation and this is beneficial for intestinal inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease. Research studies have shown that fish oil reduces inflammation in the gut. Taking fish oil as a supplement or directly through foods may reduce the symptoms associated with Crohn’s. If you do not want to take a fish oil supplement, there are numerous sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish (herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines, and tuna), and nuts and seeds (walnuts, chia seeds, and flax seeds). It is important to consult with your doctor prior to taking omega-3 fatty acids so that they can guide you on daily dosage and consumption.

3. Vitamin D has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce inflammation and mellow symptoms associated with Crohn’s disease. You can get your daily dose of vitamin D by spending some time in the sun, taking a supplement, or eating foods rich in the vitamin such as salmon, herring, sardines, cod liver oil, egg yolks, and mushrooms.

4. Wormwood has been shown in research studies to be the most effective herb in treating the symptoms of Crohn’s disease. A ten-week German study specifically showed that the use of wormwood enabled patients to reduce their medication dosage. This herb can be taken in the form of tea, capsule, or tincture.
