Fitness Activities For People Who Hate Exercise

While the idea of being a fitness guru who relishes time at the gym is nice, it’s just not a reality for some people. Some of us hate to exercise. We’ve tried the treadmills, the aerobics videos, the yoga classes, and none of these structured fitness routines really seem to work. Still, everyone needs to be active to get fit, so you have to find some activity you don’t despise. Exercise comes in many forms, so don’t let your thinking box you in.

Walk With a Purpose

A lot of people don’t like walking because they don’t like going out for aimless strolls. You don’t actually have to walk aimlessly. You don’t even have to go outdoors. Instead of walking just for walking’s sake, walk a dog (yours, or a friend’s—maybe you can make some money off of it). Go to a mall or a museum and walk around there instead of walking around the neighborhood—you might find it more interesting and engaging than walking down the same city streets every day. Leave the car home and walk to run errands—go to the store to pick up salad stuff for dinner, or go return those library books.

Dance

All those aerobics and other dance-style videos can make you feel really lame. They’re unnecessary—the important part is to just get moving. Turn on your favorite music in the mornings or the evenings and just get up and dance—do this alone in a room so you can let yourself go and don’t have to worry about who is watching.

Don’t like just dancing in place for a half-hour? Why not dance around while getting your chores done? Dance over to the bed to make it. Dance around the laundry room as you sort socks and underwear. Dance around the house with your feather duster. This way, if the exercise didn’t make you feel good, being productive will at least give you some satisfaction.

Play

Who says exercise has to be boring? You can have a lot of fun just playing. Play Frisbee in the evenings after dinner with your spouse. Play a daily game or two of twister with your kids. Get a basketball hoop over the garage door and start shooting. If you prefer, get into a hobby that keeps you active like surfing or ping pong.

The idea is to find activities that get you up and moving a couple of times per day. It doesn’t matter if the activity is officially considered “exercise” or just fun, as long as it works.
