Bicycle Your Way Into Shape

Have you ever went for a bike ride on a nature trail and you just felt free like a bird soaring? Cycling enthusiasts will go on and on about how incredible biking makes them feel. Rightly so, because biking is a great way to get a good workout and get your body into shape. It not only gives you an aerobic workout but also strengthens the muscles of your lower body. Biking is a great way to burn calories, reduce stress, and improve your mental and physical health.

Exercise Helps You Become Healthier

Regular exercise can decrease a person’s risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. It can also help with blood pressure and reduce cholesterol. Biking is a great form of exercise because it is a low-impact workout. Running or jogging may be tough on the joints, but biking is smooth sailing, so there is less of a chance for strain or injury.

Biking is something you can do just about anywhere and purchasing a bike is easy as well. If you do not want to purchase a bike, there are bike rental shops that allow you to rent a bicycle. Many vacation areas have bike rental shops readily available. You can ride on the road, sidewalk, or on a trail. Wearing a protective helmet is advisable to protect you in case you have an accident.

Burn Those Calories

If you would like to lose some weight or maintain your current weight, bicycling is a great way to burn calories. Riding at a steady pace, you can burn about 300 calories per hour and give your metabolism a boost at the same time. You will also be strengthening your muscles in your upper and lower body.

It is important to know bike safety before heading out for a ride. First, make sure that your bike is in good working order. Test the brakes to make sure they work. Second, be sure that your bike helmet fits you properly. It should be a bit snug so that it will not fall off in the case of an accident. Third, only ride in areas that are safe. Do not ride on icy roads and try to ride in areas where traffic is minimal. Observe all road signs just as if you were driving a car. Be very observant of motorists because not all of them pay attention as well as they should, so you want to be aware of what is going on around you at all times.

If you have not been biking, I encourage you to give it a shot. If you have children, go ahead and let them ride with you. There are plenty of riding trails in many cities. Check with your local recreational park to see if there are any near you. At the very least, you could ride in your neighborhood on the sidewalk. You will find that your stress levels may decrease and your energy levels may increase. Cycling is a great way to get and stay in shape.
