Finding Your Perfect Diet Plan

There’s so much debate over which diets are best— people want to know, “which diet really works?” Well, there’s a little secret I’ll let you in on—they all do.

That’s right! Vegetarian, low carb, calorie counting, low fat, planned meal programs, etc.— only barring some really extreme diets (like living on nothing but cookies or swallowing tape worms), they pretty much will all work for you.

Success and failure usually comes down not to the diet, but being able to stick to it. Diets work when you stick to them—it’s when you start growing tired of them, cheating, getting too lazy to measure, etc., that they begin to fail. If a diet isn’t compatible to your lifestyle, if it’s not convenient, chances are it’s not going to last.

For example, if you don’t like meat, you probably aren’t going to be very happy on the Atkins diet. If you have to work within a tight food budget, and don’t have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen, then a diet that involves juicing mounds of fresh produce several times per day is probably just a pipe dream. And while being a vegan can be healthy and lead to weight loss, is it realistic if you don’t like veggies or legumes?

So the trick is finding not the diet that works, but the diet you can work best. Here are some tips to help you do that.

What kinds of foods do you like to eat?

Naturally, your best bet is to gravitate towards the way you like to eat in general. For example, if you love breads and pasta, you probably should not opt for a low carb diet. It might be unrealistic to expect yourself to do a complete 180 turn and avoid the foods that have always been the bulk of your diet. Rather, consider a diet that controls carb portion size and has you switch to whole grain versions.

What do you hate?

Likewise, don’t pick a diet that forces you to consume copious amounts of foods that you don’t like. If you don’t like raw veggies, then a raw veggie diet is a bad idea to start. If meal replacement shakes leave you feeling unsatisfied and hungry, don’t opt for them just because someone else thinks they work.

How much do you like to cook?

If you love to cook, then it’s great to grab yourself some cookbooks that outline a wonderfully nutritionally balanced meal. If cooking is really not your thing, then all you’re going to do is stress yourself out with the additional chore. In your case, a pre-packaged diet delivery system or pre-made frozen meals may be your best bet.

When it comes down to it, don’t look for a diet that will work a miracle. Look for one you can realistically see yourself sticking to, because chances are it will work the best for you.
