Dangerous Fad Diets To Stay Away From

Have you ever heard anyone say, “I’ll do anything to lose weight!” Some people actually mean it—and as a result, have suffered health problems or even died. Unfortunately, there are diets out there touted as ‘miracle cures’ when they’re nothing more than health hazards. The whole point of losing weight is to look and feel good, but that can’t happen if you do something to permanently damage your health. Beware of some of the more outlandish diets out there that make big promises but just don’t deliver.

Detox Diets

They seem to be all the rage, particularly among celebrities. People who promote them talk about instant weight loss just by eliminating excess waste from your colon (which some claims range can be in excess of 25 pounds). The problem is that these diets are dangerous, requiring you to consume large quantities of laxatives or home-made laxative drinks consisting of things like olive oil and Epsom salts. The biggest danger is malnutrition, which can result in seizures, permanent kidney problems, or death. Malnutrition is another problem since you're supposed to eat very little during these detox periods. Abusing laxatives is more of a health risk than a miracle cure.

Single Food Diets

You might have heard of the cabbage soup diet, the pudding diet, the grapefruit diet, or even the cookie diet. These diets claim that if the bulk of your diet consists of a certain food, you'll lose weight. The real reason you lose weight is because you are eating so little, especially after the first few days, once you're tired of the one thing you're allowed to eat,. The problem with such diets is that you can suffer from starvation and malnutrition, since you're not getting a variety of nutrients, and your food intake will decrease as you get sicker and sicker of the one thing you're allowed to consume.

The Sunlight Diet/Breatharianism

Believe it or not, there are people who try to sell the notion that they have not consumed food in months, sometimes years. They claim that all the nutrients you need can come from standing in the sun a few times per day, or from breathing fresh air. Not one of these gurus have been able to prove that they’re able to go without food—but the sad fact is, people have died trying to follow their instructions. Basic biology—food is not negotiable. You need it.

The Tapeworm Diet

You can actually purchase tapeworms you can swallow—and people do this in the hopes that the worm will consume all the food and gain the weight. The problem is, the worm gets all the nutrition as well and can cause other potential health issues. Plus, it’s just—eww! Infesting yourself with parasites? No good can come of it.
