5 Foods That Could Be Tripping Up Your Diet

Do you feel like you’ve been dieting forever but getting nowhere? Does the scale seem fixated on a certain number and it just won’t budge below it? Chances are you are indulging in a classic diet buster—a food that you think is okay, but that’s really tripping up your efforts. Take a minute to consider if any of these foods are causing you diet problems.

Fat-Free Snacks

Are you hooked on fat-free snacks, such as fat-free cookies, puddings, snack bars, and chips? That could be your major problem. Fat-free snacks are liberally stacked on the supermarket shelves, and dieters flock to them thinking that they are the answer to keeping a diet from being dull and difficult. Unfortunately, that false sense of security is what does us in—fat-free foods are often laden with sugar and extra calories in order to replace the fats removed from them.

Coffee

Do you have a habit of treating yourself to a daily coffee drink? This could be the culprit in upsetting your diet. Unless you’re drinking it black with little sweetener and low-fat milk, that coffee can cost you a small meal’s worth of calories per day. The larger the size, the more cream, sugar, and flavorings are going into it. What’s worse, because it’s a drink, a lot of people forget to tabulate it into the diet plan.

Smoothies

While we’re on the subject of diet-foiling beverages, let’s consider smoothies. Even a small smoothie contains more than a couple of servings of fruit. That’s a lot of sugar to drink in a single serving. Plus, if you’re buying your smoothie from a store, there’s a chance that they’re also adding sugars and sweeteners to combat the natural tartness in many fruits. Unless you are making yourself all-natural green (vegetable-heavy) smoothies in the blender, they’re best to avoid.

Deli Salads

You may think that passing up the roast beef or processed ham is a sensible choice when you’re purchasing your lunch, so you opt for a healthier tuna or chicken salad instead. Unfortunately, many delis and sandwich shops use so much fatty mayo in their lunch salads that you are probably eating the highest calorie meal in the place. Instead, opt for a natural chicken or turkey sandwich, or an all-veggie sub.

Hummus

Touted as a healthy food dip, you might have thought hummus was a sensible dip for your raw veggie snacks, or spread for your wrap. It can be, if you make it yourself. Most store-bought hummus spreads are loaded with vegetable oils, sugars, salt, and preservatives. The moral of the story: always check your labels, including serving size, before indulging on foods that seem too good to be true.
