In this day and age having a big white beaming smile seems to be at the top of everyone’s beauty priority list. Oil pulling is an ancient Indian remedy that can kill harmful bacteria in your mouth, reduce bad breath, aid in preventing cavities, improve gum health, and reduce inflammation. And, the anti-inflammatory benefits of coconut oil pulling have been shown to be helpful to those with conditions linked to inflammation.

But how does coconut oil pulling whiten your teeth? The oil in your mouth will stick to the oil in the bacteria membranes and when you swish the oil in your mouth, it physically pulls the bacteria off of your teeth and mouth.

How To Whiten Teeth by Coconut Oil Pulling

To whiten your teeth with coconut oil pulling, purchase extra-virgin coconut oil. You can purchase other types of coconut oil, but the extra-virgin coconut oil is a popular choice because of its pleasant taste.

Start by putting a tablespoon of the extra-virgin coconut oil in your mouth and swish it around slowly for about 15-20 minutes. Make sure that you are sitting upright the entire time. Also, you can start slowly with 5-10 minutes and then work your way up to 15-20 minutes. This may seem like a long time, but you can keep yourself busy by watching TV or reading and the time will fly right by. With all of the health benefits of oil pulling, it’s well worth the time.

Once the time is up, take the oil in your mouth and spit it out in the garbage can. Do not swallow the oil and do not spit this out in the sink or toilet because it can lead to clogging. Some people like to brush their teeth directly after an oil pulling, though there are those who believe it is better not to because it retains the good bacteria and allows for your oral microbiome to rebalance. Either way, it’s important to keep a separate toothbrush to use after oil pulling.

Precautions

Coconut oil pulling does not replace your daily oral care of brushing your teeth and flossing. As well, coconut oil pulling is not advised for those with allergies to coconuts. Otherwise, there aren’t any other known risks of oil pulling.
