Fasting increases fat burning and this is good news for us especially
those that struggle with obesity. However, one needs
a 3 days fast to trigger an increase in the fat burning rate :
the energy stored as fat in the adipose tissue becomes the body's fuel
during an absence of food that lasts longer than 72 hours.
Thus, to make a difference in fat burning one must fast for more
than3 days. Seems like our bodies are naturally well equipped for fasting.
However, it is important to keep in mind that prolonged fasting causes severe
changes in all systems of the body. Though fasting for less then 3 days
seems to be less efficient, it is also safer. The weekly fasting is a part
of several empirical health practices known to me. It can be as long as
24, 36, or 42 hours, with or without water (the last one is what I strongly
disagree with Tell me if you would like to learn more about these
practices (that are rather health systems including nutritional, hygienic,
and behavioral elements).
I personally fasted for more than 20 years, using the method of Dr. Nikolayev
which was (and still is as far as I am concerned) very reputable in Russia,
including conventional recognition. Fasting helped me to manage my bad spinal
problem but it made me gaining weight on the long run. I stopped fasting
when I tried a low carb diet, which actually is a controlled fast.
Generally, people who experienced fasting, reported physical, emotional,
and spiritual benefits. Fasts have long been among life regimentation
rules of many if not most religions. Many fasters reported an increased sensitivity
to taste shades. After resuming eating, your taste buds will be satisfied
with lesser taste intensity thus reducing the taste influence
on the body weight set point and plateau.
